Curtis "Cleve" Reding, Jr. Has Passed Away

Friends, our bar lost a pillar of our bankruptcy community over the past weekend.  On Sunday, October 9, 2016, Curtis “Cleve” Reding, Jr. passed away after a short battle with cancer.  Mr. Reding served as the Chapter 13 Standing Trustee for the Middle District of Alabama for over thirty years.  As consumer bankruptcy attorneys, Mr. Reding taught us all how to be better advocates for our bankruptcy clients and just better people in general.  He will be greatly missed by his family, his staff, his church, his golfing pals and the entire Alabama bankruptcy community.

You can tell the quality of the man by the people he chooses to work with and Mr. Reding was the embodiment of this sentiment.  My good friend, Sabrina McKinney, has trained under and worked alongside Mr. Reding as a staff attorney for the Office of the Chapter 13 Standing Trustee for the Middle District of Alabama for many years.   The professionalism and warmth exhibited by Sabrina and all the staff members at the Trustee’s office is an admirable reflection on the aptitude of Mr. Reding as a lawyer, administrator and friend.

Mr. Reding was dedicated to his Lord and Savior and his church.   According to his obituary, he helped found Grace@Bell Road Presbyterian Church in Montgomery, Alabama, and loved his church family.  In addition to his family and his church, Mr. Reding liked nothing more than to be out golfing and watching Alabama football.  Leonard Math recently shared with me that he and Mr. Reding had been golfing buddies for twenty years and that he would sorely miss his friend.  I think it’s a testament to Mr. Reding, as well as Mr. Math, that such a strong friendship flourished over twenty years of sliced shots, water penalties and sand traps.  Finally, let’s all keep Jane McCoy Reding, his wife and partner for 47 years, and his family in our prayers as we all adjust to the loss of a truly good man.  When I think about Mr. Reding’s passing I cannot help but draw comfort from the following: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”  Matthew 25:23.
